Brougham Castle, one of the castles owned and managed by English Heritage, is a massive structure standing in the rural area of Penrith. This is one of the few castles where tourists can go to the top of the keep. The Castle has been greatly altered throughout history, making it a great site for visual analysis. Although not here for any official survey, I was deeply attracted by the signs of alterations on every facade. As a living jigsaw puzzle, as building archaeologists referred to, the castle is surely a fascinating historic asset.
